Save your ASH with prevention!

Save your ASH with prevention!

June 28, 2010 by Frazee Gardens

Hendricks County is now QUARANTINED for Emerald ash borer.
You may have noticed the purple tee-pee traps hanging around the area that are for tracking the Emerald ash borer. They are an invasive species of beetle introduced from Asia, most likely from wood used to hold cargo on ships and airplanes. The adult EAB mates & lays 70-90 eggs in early summer. Once the larvae hatch about a week later, they bore through the bark & feed on the inner living tissue of ash trees. The entry holes are so small they are very hard to see making diagnosis difficult before permanent damage is done. The holes do resemble the shape of a captial letter “D.”

QUARANTINED means it is illegal to move firewood or live ash out of the county.

The EAB WILL kill ash trees left unprotected. It’s not a question of ‘if,’ but ‘when.’ If you have ash trees you need to start treatment now. A professional trunk injection offers the best protection available, lasting for up to 2-3 years! Call Josh at 852-8440 for more information.

A do-it-yourself alternative.
Frazee Gardens carries Fertilome Tree & Shrub Systemic Drench that can be used once a year as a preventative measure. The roots must take in the treatment and distribute it throughout, so the shot described above is faster for a large tree. However, if you have a tree with a trunk under 6” in diameter this can be effective.
